Challenge
Tego Interactive was approached by 24GMedia, a next-generation mobile payment and application service provider, to build a mobile ordering system. 24G Media’s client was a global food retailer that made the strategic decision to offer a mobile Web application service allowing customers to order and pay for the meal via their mobile phone. The goal was to provide a commercially releasable application that would be used by customers of the food retailer in the UK to locate their nearest store by postcode, browse a menu, place food items in a shopping basket, make payment, and place the order for either pick-up or take-away depending on the capabilities of the store.
This service had to fulfill several key criteria:
- Allow mobile Web access to the application by food retailers customers on a single UK Mobile Operator Network.
- Detect the Mobile Device being used by the Customer and present an Application Flow and appropriately formatted Webpage for that device to provide best-case user experience.
- Provide a courtesy message to users of non-supported Devices and an option to be notified when and if their Device is supported.
- Allow Customers to locate their nearest store by postcode, browse a menu and place food items in Shopping Basket, make payment and submit the order for delivery or take-away depending on the local store capabilities.
- Provide an option to view a history of orders placed by the customer.
- It must allow flexible in-app promotions, menu item and pricing updates from the administration back-end.
- Charge orders directly to mobile phone subscribers monthly phone bill and notify POS of a successful payment.
Solution
The first task was to setup the Microsoft Visual Studio integrated development environment that mirrored production using Microsoft .NET Framework, SQL database and Web services. For widest coverage across handsets, the mobile Web application was then built using the browser-rendered markup language XHTML and custom CSS.
The end result was a simple and elegant application that was sharply focused on utility and usability. The user experience has been meticulously developed by Tego to make the interaction easy and intuitive. To streamline ordering and payment the application allowed consumers to enter in their address, which could be saved for easy ordering, and concluded by taking them to a check order page, where they could see what was charged to their mobile phone bill. Finally, users received a confirmation of the order and the option to save the complete process to their history, ensuring that future orders would be effortless.
Benefit
Collaborating with 24G Media, allowed Tego Interactive deep insight into what consumers and merchants expect from mobile commerce. 24G Media’s commerce middleware solution ensured a seamless integration with the operator’s billing systems and POS, while Tego focused on the customer-facing front-end and mapped out the precise functions the mobile Web app must perform to satisfy the chain’s requirements for usability and the consumers’ demand for transparency.
By developing a mobile Web application maintenance and updates may happen on-the-fly and cost efficiently. The food retailer can easily manage marketing and promotional activities providing the customer with additional benefits.
Mobile commerce is shaping up to be the next big thing as we have seen a raft of reports from sources including the mobile marketing Association and the GSMA documenting the interest of consumers in using their mobile phones to research, order and pay for goods and services. At the other end of the spectrum, an Aberdeen survey of major retailers in the U.S. found that 38 percent of respondents are at some stage of integrating mobile into the retail experience. Against this backdrop, it’s no surprise that more retailers and commerce enablers are working with Tego Interactive to execute their mobile retail strategies.
